Founded by William J. Riley in 1906, New Balance started small, producing highly flexible, three-point arch supports for those that suffered discomfort wearing shoes, all inspired by the daily balancing acts performed by Williams’ own backyard chickens as they nimbly navigated the coop. Chasing supportive, innovative comfort from the moment it was born over a century ago, New Balance would become a sporting shoe manufacturer of import among both athletes and basketballers, loved for its specialist footwear.
Rolling on to 1972, under new owner Jim Davis, New Balance foresaw a shift in the market. Hoping to ride the wave of casual style and streetwear, they began a push for leisure time products and comfy, all-day pieces that would eventually be sought-after from coast to coast and beyond, all renowned for their quality and comfort. Basketball is engrained deeply in the history of New Balance, and few shoes embody this inspiration greater than the 550. Designed by the legendary Steven Smith, the 550 built upon its b-ball focused predecessors the 480 and 650, bringing exaggerated lines inspired by 90s graffiti, all on a stable heel and responsive, updated traction. Fast-forward to 2018, and, after a period of obscurity for the 550, it finally catches the attention of nostalgia icon Teddy Santis and his Aime Leon Dore label, sparking new interest in this venerable piece. Refreshed and remade for a more appreciative age, remastered 550 shoes debuted in 2020, continuing to ride the wave of 90s inspiration with new colourways and releases.

Materials seem to be of good quality. After one week of daily wear, they still look new! They actually fit true to size and are comfortable in the toe box for my wider toes. I always order a full or half size up to accommodate my wider toes. Either 10.5 for most shoes or 11 for the narrower fitting shoes. 10.5 was perfect for these. I like that they are cool and smart looking, but something different as everyone is finally getting burned out on the nikes!

A lot of people were saying that these weren’t great for wide feet but these were so comfy after a few days !! I wear a size 11 in converse but I accidentally ordered a size 9 for these and they fit great , I wish sizing charts were equal everywhere 💔💔very happy with them tho , they’re super cute and comfy

I purchased these new 550s for our 3 week trip to Europe; christened them on the travel from Sydney > Dubai > Fiumicino (22 hours of flying). Love the comfortable fit and their style. I will certainly be wearing them on our 3 day attendance of the F1 Hungarian GP at Budapest in 2 weeks’ time.

Honestly I was bit skeptical at first because I didn’t think this show would be that comfortable or look cute on my feet but i was very wrong. I love the way they feel and how these shoes match basically anything I wear. Definitely buying another pair of these and the 530’s too!

The shoes at comfortable both walking at home and walking everyday all the time during my trip to Europe. They look nice and I like the color too. Also I tied it nice once and they never come undone unless I just do it myself so that is nice.

Got 2 pair because they looked super nice and comfortable. Everyone said to size down 1/2 size so I did. Shoe fit length wise but was incredibly narrow to the point I was afraid I was going to burst the seams out of it.

These shoes are considerably heavy and thick. Because of that, people who have the tendency to sweat frequently in shoes may have a problem with these shoes. However these shoes are extremely comfortable and well made.

They are very cute and comfy! I did get them delivered a little wonky. The left show is completely fine but the right shoe had a small piece of the soul coming off. And as I tie the shoe it looks a little deformed :(
