What is a running spike?

Specifically designed for the track, they use lightweight uppers, but the standout feature are the metal spikes that allow you to put down all your power on the running track. Housing the spikes, a near rigid spike plate allows various amounts of flex depending on the shoe and the distance it is aimed at.

What is ”Middle-distance” in track running?

Roughly speaking, we refer to distances from 800 to 1500m as middle distance, 1500 to 10,000m as long distance, and 400m and below as sprint spikes.

Are middle-distance spikes worth it?

Providing a propulsive plate, lightweight cushioning and breathable uppers, the middle-distance shoes on this list can definitely make a difference when it comes to race day. But it’s the spikes on the outsole that let you put down consistent power, even around a wet bend for ultimate performance and your best times.

What is the difference between sprint spikes, mid distance spikes and long-distance spikes?

Sprint spikes aim to put you on your toes. They have maximum grip, which means more spikes underneath, all placed on the forefoot. Lightweight and explosive, comfort is not a prime consideration when they may only be needed for 10 seconds!

Middle distance spikes allow a little more flex in the spike plate and although still lightweight, may have cushioning underfoot.

Designed to withstand forces for a much longer period, long distance spikes are more cushioned and more durable. With less aggressive (meaning more flexible) spike plates they are still fast, and still lightweight, but a little less so.

What spikes are good for middle distance racing?

Even within the range of “middle-distance” you will find that some spikes specialise further, for example, both adidas and New Balance have 2 shoes on this list offering different levels of technology, and different feels depending on what you want from your spikes. Your best bet is to take a look through our list below and see which one suits your needs best.

Our Top Picks

Some spikes cross between middle and long distance, some specialise more than others, and some use more up to date technology than others, but all of them offer something to the committed runner. Don’t forget to check out our full range to find the perfect set for you.

Ray Barlow

Having suffered from Chronic Fatigue for over a decade, I am a recent convert to the joys of running. Although every run steals a lot of energy, the mental health and fitness benefits more than make up for it. My runs are mainly across the back of the nearby beaches, dodging between the tourists. When not geeking out over the latest running tech, you can find me trying new gins, making gins, or boring anyone within earshot about gin.
