    Hoka Carbon X-SPE

Train, race and everything in between wearing the Hoka Carbon X-SPE men’s running shoe in White/Blue Ice, featuring an updated, reinforced upper for additional support and durability.

Bringing the much-loved Carbon X into true all-rounder territory, the Hoka Carbon X-SPE boasts a refreshed upper that’s as comfortable in the gym as it is on the road. The SPE edition of the Carbon X features a new moulded heel collar for additional support at the rear of the foot, along with reinforcement at the eyelets and forefoot. It’s a more versatile shoe as a result, giving you that extra little bit of stability you need for different types of training. The upper remains a single, tongue-less layer, providing a comfortable fit whatever your goals, while underfoot, the renowned PROFLY X midsole, Meta-Rocker and carbon fibre plate are present and correct, combining to offer the efficient, propulsive ride the Carbon X is known for.

    Carbon Plate

Carbon plates have well-researched benefits and a seemingly endless list of race wins and world records.

They create the firmer feel that fast racers are looking for and help to guide the foot through your stride, providing a touch of extra support. They can also help create a rocker feel, with the stiffness allowing the shoe to pivot – as the toe goes down, the heel must come up, easing you into your next stride.

Although stiff, they do flex, providing an energised pop of forward momentum as the plate fights to retain its shape.

Each brand, and almost every shoe, uses a plate differently. Different shapes, thicknesses, and designs are used to prioritise a different aspect of performance. Some aim exclusively to guide the stride, while others focus solely on propulsion.

    Extra Cushioning

Featuring extra-deep stacks of midsole foam, extra-cushioned shoes offer improved impact absorption, comfort, and even performance. With modern foams providing energy return through your stride, the more foam under your foot, the bigger the spring forward. The trade-off of extra foam is additional weight and reduced ground feel. It can also be expensive to create and stabilise so much foam.

    Neutral

Neutral running shoes are designed to provide a smooth sensation without correcting your gait. They allow your natural motion to flow, while still offering a snug fit and a cushioned feel underfoot. As such, they’re ideal for runners who don’t overpronate.

    HOKA

Where others follow, HOKA lead. Originally intending to improve downhill traction and stability, HOKA discovered a formula for success across any terrain that has been replicated across many other brands. It also made this relative newcomer a big hitter in the running shoe market.

Start with a supremely cushioned midsole, offering marshmallow softness, shock absorption, comfort, and support at varying levels across the range. Then apply the Meta-Rocker. Designed to drive runners forward, this shaped underfoot geometry complements the natural gait cycle – by curving the shoe at the toe and heel, it ensures a smooth transition from impact to toe off. Lastly, the Active Foot Frame functions like a bucket seat in a car, cradling the heel and offering a secure feel across the foot.

The first thing you notice picking up a HOKA is how light they feel: despite the deep cushioned midsole, they have an almost weightless build. Combine that featherlight feel with the propulsive foam and forward geometry, and you get a sensation of pure speed. As HOKA would say, “Time to Fly”.

    Road Running

It might say road, but we don’t just mean pounding closed-off streets on race day. Road shoes are predominantly for the pavement.

They feature flat rubber traction for confident footing in the city and enhanced cushioning to soak up the strain of every stride.

    Best for Race Day

Race day shoes have two priorities: lightness and propulsion.

Outsole rubber is traditionally the heaviest component of any running shoe, so race day shoes use lighter compounds of rubber, thinner layers, and targeted placement to reduce weight where it really counts. A super-thin upper with minimal overlays saves additional grams for a lightweight feel up top.

To help build your speed, propulsive midsole foams often combine with internal plates to give you the edge and drive you across the line.

Stripped back and powerful, race day shoes are not built to be as durable as daily mileage trainers.
