First released in 1987, the Nike Air Max premiered some specific innovations that would later pop up again and again. Designed by the up-and-coming Tinker Hatfield, who had only been with Nike since ’85, the original AM was looking to push boundaries with brand-new Max Air cushioning and an architecturally inspired design. On top of new, ultra-soft Air cushioning, the iconic visible Air midsole would draw the eye and show off the tech in style. As the first of the Air Max range created to be a pure lifestyle shoe, Nike went all-in on comfort and streetwear looks with the Air Max 270. It’s named after the 270 degrees of visible Air cushioning in the heel, which was the largest Air Max unit on release, standing at a hefty 38mm. The huge pocket of air provides exceptional cushioning and support, making the 270 a superbly comfortable option for travel and everyday wear, while also catching the eye and screaming iconic Air style from nearly all angles.

Taking cues from the Air Max 93 and Air Max 180, the AM270 served up a hybrid silhouette and breathable mesh upper that placed it squarely between its predecessors and some of the more futuristic Nike offerings, such as the VaporMax.
