The brainchild of iconic designer Tinker Hatfield, the Air Trainer 1 was concepted as an ideal middle-ground between basketball and running shoes, bringing enough performance and comfort for both. Completed and released by 1987, it marked the birth of the modern Cross Trainer, bringing with it a mix of a medium-lifted heel and secure strap that was excellent for shooting hoops, running or even exercise. Popular with athletes and enthusiasts throughout the 90s, the Air Trainer 1 was another feather in the cap of Tinker Hatfield, creating its own space in Nike’s lineup that allowed all-comers to use a single shoe from the court to the gym and back again.
